Vacuum bagging film is a commonly used technique in the manufacturing of composite materials to achieve an airtight sealing environment during the part fabrication process. The vacuum bagging film is employed to wrap and enclose the composite material products, ensuring the expulsion of air and maintaining pressure during the application of pressure. This type of film is typically made of materials such as polyester, providing high strength, resistance to high temperatures, and tear resistance to adapt to complex manufacturing environments.
Improved Product Quality:
Vacuum bagging removes air trapped between layers, reducing the risk of voids and ensuring a more uniform consolidation of the composite material. This results in higher-quality parts with improved structural integrity and surface finish.
Increased Material Efficiency:
By applying uniform pressure, vacuum bagging ensures that the resin is distributed more evenly, minimizing waste. This can lead to a more efficient use of materials, as there is less excess resin that needs to be trimmed away or discarded.
Enhanced Mechanical Properties:
Parts manufactured using vacuum bagging often exhibit superior mechanical properties, such as increased strength and stiffness, because the fibers are more tightly compacted and better saturated with resin.
Versatility:
Vacuum bagging films are available in a variety of materials and thicknesses to suit different resin systems and curing temperatures. This flexibility allows manufacturers to select the most appropriate film for their specific application and desired properties of the finished part.
Energy Efficiency:
The process can be more energy-efficient compared to other methods, as it can operate at lower temperatures and pressures, reducing the energy consumption of ovens, autoclaves, or presses.
Laying Up:
The composite materials are placed onto the mold in layers.
Covering:
The laid-up composite and mold are then covered with the vacuum bagging film, which is sealed around the edges to create an airtight envelope.
Evacuating:
A vacuum pump is connected to the setup, and air is evacuated from under the vacuum bagging film. This applies pressure over the composite materials, compacting them onto the mold.
Curing:
The composite is left under vacuum pressure to cure. Heat may be applied to accelerate the curing process, depending on the resin system used.
Demolding:
Once cured, the vacuum bagging film is removed, and the finished composite part is taken out of the mold.
