Release film is an auxiliary material commonly utilized in the manufacturing process of composite materials, designed to facilitate the easy separation of the composite from the mold upon completion of part fabrication. Typically composed of materials such as polyester or polyethylene, it features low surface adhesion properties to ensure the effortless detachment between the composite and the mold. Furthermore, the release film provides a protective function for the surface of the composite material, safeguarding against damage or contamination.
Non-Stick Surface:
The primary benefit of release film is its non-stick characteristic, allowing it to be easily peeled away from the cured composite without damaging the part or leaving residue.
Versatile Applications:
Release films are suitable for a wide range of composite manufacturing processes, including autoclave, vacuum bagging, and press molding, among others. They can be used with a variety of resin systems and curing temperatures.
Improved Surface Finish:
By providing a barrier between the composite material and the mold, release films help achieve a smoother, blemish-free surface finish on the final product, which is critical for both aesthetic and functional requirements.
Environmental Resistance:
Many release films are designed to be resistant to chemicals and high temperatures, making them suitable for use in processes involving aggressive resins and high curing temperatures.
Reduction in Mold Maintenance:
By acting as a protective layer between the composite material and the mold surface, release films can significantly reduce wear and tear on molds, extending their service life and reducing maintenance costs.
Mold Preparation:
The mold surface is cleaned and possibly treated with a release agent to ensure easy removal of the release film and composite part after curing.
Laying Up Composite Materials:
Composite materials, typically prepreg fabrics or resin-infused fabrics, are laid onto the mold in the desired orientation and thickness.
Application of Release Film:
The release film is applied over the top of the composite lay-up. It can be smooth or perforated, depending on whether resin bleed-out is desired during the curing process.
Application of Bleeders and Breathers:
If necessary, additional materials like bleeder fabrics and breathers are applied on top of the release film to assist in the removal of excess resin and to ensure even pressure distribution during the curing process.
Curing:
The composite material is cured under heat and pressure. The release film facilitates the curing process by preventing the composite from sticking to the mold or bagging materials.
Demolding:
After curing, the release film is carefully peeled away from the composite part, revealing a smooth surface. The composite part can then be removed from the mold for further processing or finishing.
