Peel Ply is a surface treatment material extensively used in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Typically, it's a layer of fabric that can serve as a separation layer or surface pre-treatment material during the production of composite materials.
The function of Peel Ply is to create a smooth, uniform, and suitably rough surface for improved adhesion or coating adherence during the manufacture of composite materials. It provides a surface that can be easily stripped or removed, allowing for separation from other materials when required. This material is commonly used during the extrusion, lamination, and curing processes of composite material production.
The surface of Peel Ply typically has a fibrous texture, which can enhance the adhesion of coatings or adhesives to the substrate while maintaining ease of peeling. It can also provide uniform surface quality, which contributes to reducing defects and bubble formation.
Improved Surface Finish:
After the curing process, when the Peel Ply is removed, it leaves a clean, smooth, and textured surface behind. This texture is ideal for secondary bonding operations. The cleaned and prepared substrate eliminates the need for further surface preparation, such as abrasive grinding.
Reduced Contamination:
Peel Ply ensures that the product surface is free from contaminants, such as release agents. By removing the peel ply, any impurities that came into contact with it during the curing process are also taken away, providing a secure and clean surface for bonding or painting.
Easy Handling:
As Peel Ply creates a protective layer on the product surface, it assists in handling the materials and products during the manufacturing process, reducing the chances of damage or harm.
Surface Preparation:
Peel Ply leaves a fine-textured surface on the part after it is peeled off, which aids in secondary bonding or painting. This can eliminate the need for sanding or abrading.
Release Agent:
It can act as a release agent, preventing the bonding of the composite material to other surfaces during the curing process.
Fabric Infusion Process:
Peel Ply is an integral part of the vacuum infusion process for fabrics. It standardizes the resin content in the infused layer and helps to create a uniform exterior finish.
Bleeder/Breather Function:
Acting as a bleed cloth, Peel Ply allows for the routing of excess resin that is too heavy to evaporate from epoxy, polyester, or similar matrix systems.
Barrier Layer:
It also separates the composite from subsequent process material layers, such as breather fabric and vacuum bags, making these layers easier to remove.
